Sandpoint committee asks clerk to tell student bear concern is outside city jurisdiction, recommends Bonner County

The Sandpoint Sustainability Committee voted to have the city clerk send a written response to a student who submitted a report advocating for bear-proof receptacles, wildlife specialist response, and public education to discourage feeding.

Committee members said the written submission described possible countywide concerns but provided no statistics to show the issue exists within Sandpoint city limits. Members noted that Idaho Fish and Game is the agency that maintains wildlife specialists and that Bonner County would likely have jurisdiction outside city limits.

During the April 22 meeting committee members summarized the student’s recommendations: replacing waste receptacles with bear-resistant containers, recruiting or using wildlife specialists for nonlethal responses, and discouraging feeding such as birdseed that attracts bears. Members agreed the committee had not received evidence that bears are a problem inside the city and that the student should be referred to the county and other agencies for further action.

The committee approved a motion directing the city clerk to write to the student, thanking him for the submission, stating that the committee found the matter outside city jurisdiction, and recommending he contact Bonner County and other relevant agencies. The motion passed by voice vote; the transcript does not record a roll-call tally.
