The Lakeville Library Board on Wednesday approved a proposal to spend $992.79 from Sabbath funds to purchase phonics equipment and kit materials the library will circulate to tutors and patrons.
Library staff said the kits are intended for use by volunteer tutors and parents to support phonics instruction for children and adults learning to read. The director said staff reviewed recommended products and suppliers and spoke with local literacy specialists when assembling the list.
Trustees discussed whether the kits align with school curricula and how tutors would use the materials. The board agreed the kits are supplemental resources rather than a replacement for classroom instruction. Trustees also discussed cataloging and packaging logistics; staff said cataloging and box supplies will be required and the items could be available by late June if ordered promptly.
The motion to fund the purchase from Sabbath funds carried by voice vote. Staff said funds in the Sabbath account were sufficient to cover the purchase; the director will proceed with ordering, cataloging and preparing the kits for circulation.
