A United Nations spokesperson said Wednesday that a virtual leaders' session on climate, convened by the secretary-general with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, delivered a "unifying message" that the world must keep building momentum for action ahead of COP30 in Brazil.
The spokesperson said Secretary-General António Guterres told leaders that climate change presents "the economic opportunities of the century" and urged action on two fronts: submit the strongest possible nationally determined climate plans well ahead of COP30, and scale up support for developing countries. "Our world faces massive headwinds and a multitude of crises, but we cannot allow climate commitments to be blown off course," the spokesperson said, paraphrasing the secretary-general.
The spokesperson added that fossil-fuel interests may try to obstruct progress, but that "the world is moving forward full speed ahead." Reporters were directed to the secretary-general's full remarks, which the spokesperson said are available online.
The deputy secretary-general, Amina Mohammed, was noted as attending the World Bank and IMF spring meetings to engage on financing for development and on preparations for the fourth international conference on financing for development to be held in Seville, Spain. The spokesperson said Mohammed would meet finance ministers and leaders of multilateral development banks to discuss implications of the challenging global economic context for the Sustainable Development Goals and to press for measures to mitigate risks to the world's poorest people.
