A commissioner praised the facilities lead, Crystal, saying the courthouse and administrative offices present well to visitors and suggesting her unit be nicknamed the “Department of First Impression.” Crystal described carrying a high workload and asked for added accounting support and training opportunities for maintenance staff so the county can perform more repairs in‑house and avoid higher outside contractor costs.
Crystal said she is seeking HVAC and fitness‑room repairs at the community center and requested a part‑time attendant — roughly four hours per day — to handle day‑to‑day cleaning and oversight given the facility’s usage. She said the county is awaiting a contractor for a fitness‑room unit repair and that replacing or repairing older facility windows, blinds and flooring has been part of her capital‑outlay requests.
On courthouse public restrooms, Crystal provided an estimate range to commissioners for a remodel of the public bathrooms and vanities in the courthouse: “I think it's like 30, 35 and 40,000 just to remodel that,” she said. She also told commissioners she has contractor estimates but noted some bids have expired and contractors increasingly request payment before work begins.
Crystal said she had arranged lighting work and security improvements at social services and coordinated with the new elections director on a ceiling light over a relocated meeting table in the elections office. She said she added USDA responsibilities to her department and included related staffing in her budget request.
Commissioners and staff discussed prioritization of projects and the difficulty of getting timely responses from colleges for training and from contractors for estimates. The board did not approve new appropriations at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to prioritize capital projects and return with refined cost estimates as part of the upcoming budget review.
