The Byram Hills Central School District on April 22 reviewed updates to its school counseling and guidance plan and previewed a redesigned high-school profile meant to make the district's course offerings and student accomplishments clearer to college admissions officers.
Christina Wilson, a member of the district's counseling staff, told the board the guidance plan — developed after a 2019 regulation requiring such plans — is updated yearly and reported that the district's counseling advisory committee includes parents, students, administrators, teachers and board members. "We do have a guidance plan in place since 2019," Wilson said, and the committee meets three times a year to revise the plan and respond to evolving student needs.
Wilson and staff described three principal changes proposed for the high-school profile: highlighting AP Honor Roll recognition, listing honor societies, and identifying which courses the district considers "advanced" (beyond honors) so admissions officers can see course rigor.
