Bee Cave council urges CAMPO to prioritize widening of State Highway 71 through city limits

The Bee Cave City Council on April 22 unanimously approved Resolution 2025-22 urging the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization to prioritize widening a segment of State Highway 71 that runs through the city.
City Manager Julie Oakley told the council the CAMPO draft 2050 regional transportation plan currently lists the full Highway 71 widening project on the plan's illustrative list, which has a longer timeline and is less likely to be funded. "It is proposed that the expansion be from the 4 lane undivided roadway that it is now to a 6 lane divided with a median in the center," Oakley said, describing the project the resolution seeks to advance.
Oakley said the resolution asks CAMPO to reclassify the portion between State Highway 620 and Vail Divide — the stretch through Bee Cave jurisdiction — onto CAMPO's constrained project list so it will be prioritized for funding and construction. She said the original, longer project ran from the Blanco County line east of Bee Cave; the city's request focuses on the local segment.
The council said officials and staff had attended the CAMPO transportation board meeting where the draft plan was discussed. Oakley and the mayor reported the draft will return to CAMPO for final action on May 12. Council members and staff said they would deliver the resolution to Commissioner Howard's office and to TxDOT and speak with TxDOT before the May 12 meeting.
Mayor Pro Tem Tim Clark and other council members urged residents to attend the CAMPO meeting on May 12 if they are able, saying a strong local turnout would demonstrate visible support. "If we were there, it would really show a big impact for that," Clark said during the discussion.
Council members made a motion to approve Resolution 2025-22; the motion carried unanimously.
The resolution does not itself authorize construction or change TxDOT's budget authority. Oakley and council members said the measure is intended to influence CAMPO's project prioritization so the Bee Cave segment has a better chance of receiving funding sooner than it otherwise would on the illustrative list.
The city will forward the approved resolution to CAMPO, Commissioner Howard's office and TxDOT and continue outreach before CAMPO's May 12 meeting.
What happened next: The council approved the resolution and will continue advocacy with CAMPO and TxDOT; CAMPO is scheduled to consider the 2050 plan on May 12.
