Committee approves bill authorizing $5 event transit fee for World Cup and NCAA finals in host counties

Assemblymember McKenner presented AB 1237, a bill authorizing a $5 fee on primary official game ticket purchases in Los Angeles County and Santa Clara County for FIFA World Cup 2026 games and for NCAA championship games in Santa Clara County, with proceeds transmitted to LA Metro and Santa Clara VTA. Ticket purchasers would be able to use event admission as a same‑day transit pass on the relevant transit system.
Chris McCallie of LA Metro testified that Metro estimates roughly $25 million in additional transit costs associated with hosting eight World Cup matches at SoFi Stadium and supported the fee as a way to encourage transit use, reduce congestion and fund added service. Delaney Hunter of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority said the authority is prepared to operate day‑to‑day service while providing surge service for major events and supports the measure.
Supporters included the California Labor Federation and local transit advocates. The committee discussed potential contractual or host‑committee agreement issues; the author said she is working with host committees to address contract language and would continue to resolve outstanding legal questions. The bill passed the committee as amended and was referred for further review.
