The Public Safety Commission voted to request that the Redondo Beach Police Department include crime-mapping graphs and clearer trend summaries as part of its monthly crime-recap presentation.
Police staff summarized recent community policing events, distracted-driver enforcement and volunteer hours. Officer-level updates noted traffic-safety activities funded by the Office of Traffic Safety and community outreach such as bicycle rodeos. The department reported 959 volunteer policing hours through April 1, 2025.
Commissioners asked for a more user-friendly format for the crime recap so the commission and public can detect trends (month-over-month and year-over-year). Commissioner Wodnicki and others suggested the department provide maps and grouped categories (for example: crimes against persons, property crimes, crimes against society) similar to some neighboring cities' portals. The commission voted to request that the police department include the department's crime-mapping graphs and trend visuals as part of the standard monthly report, and to have staff provide examples (Manhattan Beach-style graphs) for comparison.
Police staff said the department's crime analysis unit prepares the material and that more detailed maps and data are available on the department's public portal; staff agreed to provide clearer links and, when requested, more customized trend charts for commission meetings.
