Commission drafts volunteer-acknowledgment subcommittee process; asks members to wordsmith guidelines

Commissioners discussed and revised a proposed volunteer-acknowledgment subcommittee charter, five recognition categories and application and review forms. The subcommittee led by Commissioners Escondrius and Wodnicki presented draft guidelines and asked the commission for feedback and a process to finalize the program.

Commissioner Escondrius described five categories for recognition—generous donation, volunteer service, exceptional acts of compassion or crisis response, outstanding organizational leadership, and exemplary city personnel service—and presented application and review templates the subcommittee proposed to post on the city website.

Several commissioners asked that the subcommittee include a formal sunset or renewal date for the subcommittee itself (not the recognition program) and clarified that nominations should not be made difficult for the public. Commissioner Blair said a one-year term for the subcommittee was reasonable; others suggested a 90-day or six-month operating window for the drafting body but agreed the recognition program itself could be ongoing. Commissioners also discussed how to avoid duplication with existing city recognition programs and how to ensure nominations are widely publicized.

The commission voted to have commissioners submit wordsmithing edits to staff (Kyle Lofstrom) and asked staff to consolidate edits and circulate a revised draft by email; the commission will consider the revised proposal for discussion and possible action at the May meeting.

No awards were issued at this meeting; the vote set a process for commissioners to propose clarifications and then vote in May on the subcommittee charter and application materials.
