Board tables decision on medical examiner responsibilities; Mercy staff role uncertain

The board discussed taking over some responsibilities now handled by Mercy’s staff for medical-examiner work but tabled the item for a later meeting.

Officials said Mercy no longer will allow its staff to perform medical-examiner duties and that the county must either pay Mercy staff or arrange to absorb those duties. County leadership proposed handling scheduling through the county office and noted that records are largely electronic; Mercy had asked the county to take custody of some prior paper records, but county staff recommended Mercy shred older physical files because the county retains electronic copies and follows a five-year retention practice.

Board members asked whether additional security would be needed for any paper files transferred to the county; staff said lockboxes are available and that they would consult with the county clerk (Jamie) and others to confirm security and record-retention obligations. Mercy had not provided a cost figure by the time of the meeting; staff said they will obtain more information and return with options.
