Committee approves Altrusa book box for Hillcrest Park

The Parks and Recreation Beautification Committee voted to approve a request from Altrusa International to install a book-exchange box at Hillcrest Park.
Debbie Smith, president of Altrusa International in Clovis, told the committee Altrusa would provide the box, arrange installation with local scouts and maintain the collection. “We would put the books in. Wed go around Clovis and pick up a lot of different books in different areas,” Smith said, adding the club would stamp donated books “courtesy of Altrusa International.”
Committee discussion noted existing community book boxes and the need for periodic checks because donated containers sometimes are repurposed for other uses. Committee members asked staff to work with Altrusa and site lead Russell Hooper to identify a location between the playground, pickleball and basketball courts. The committee made and seconded a motion “to approve this,” and the chair called the motion approved after an affirmative voice vote with no opposition.
The group did not specify an exact installation date or final location at the meeting; committee staff and the Altrusa volunteers were directed to coordinate location and installation logistics.
The committee welcomed Altrusas offer to maintain the box and suggested signage reading “Free books. Take a book, leave a book.”
