Pflugerville parks staff outline Eggpalooza, Slice festival and multiple park projects; Murchison renovation to begin

The Slice festival is scheduled for April 26 with expanded vendor participation and a Byte Passport food sampling program (staff said 19 vendors this year and a $10 Byte Passport entitles buyers to a sample from participating vendors). Staff also previewed Deutschenfest programming and solicited commissioner input on music lineups and German cultural representation.
Capital projects and park improvements: Staff presented plans for Gillen Creek Park playground replacements and a pool fence area that will receive artificial turf and shade canopies. The turf is a K9 application chosen for drainage and durability; staff said it runs about 10 degrees cooler than concrete and that shade structures (about 2,000 square feet total) will be added. Because several project areas are in a floodplain, staff said additional engineering oversight is required and that some elements replaced in the past required different approvals when they were maintenance rather than new additions.
Murchison Park, a project from the bond program, will see a playground, shade and a new pavilion; staff said the general park renovation pre‑construction meeting is scheduled for next week and work will start imminently. Other playground replacements and upgrades—including Cambridge Estates and Barleyfield pocket park—were described as part of capital outlay work to reduce the average playground age across the system.
Staff also briefed the commission on event logistics for Deutschenfest (ride bids, Ferris wheel size and stage scheduling) and on festival lineup strategy: a mix of regional acts, family‑oriented early slots and larger headline acts in evening slots. Commissioners discussed balancing German cultural elements with broader, family‑oriented programming and suggested outreach to local and regional German bands, polka groups and school ensembles for daytime slots.
Staff said many of the park and installation items will proceed through standard procurement and construction channels and that specific timelines depend on vendor availability and site‑prep work such as concrete pad pours.
