Austin Peay committee approves tenure for 18 faculty, effective August 2025

The Academic Affairs Committee of Austin Peay State University approved tenure for 18 faculty members recommended by departments and college committees, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Maria Cronley told trustees on Dec. 6.
Cronley said the appointments follow APSU Policy 1025 and, if approved, “tenure will go into effect August 2025.” The committee voted by voice after a motion to approve the recommended faculty was moved and seconded; trustees indicated their approval with “aye” and the motion carried.
Why it matters: Tenure decisions affect faculty job security, departmental staffing and long-term academic planning. Cronley told trustees the cohort represents 14 different departments across all five colleges at Austin Peay.
Cronley said this year’s cohort includes 18 faculty members and described the group as “a great cohort of scholars and colleagues.” When a trustee asked whether about 70% of tenure-eligible faculty were tenured, Cronley responded that roughly 70% of tenure-eligible faculty currently hold tenure and described that percentage as within a normal range that will vary as senior faculty retire and new junior faculty are hired. She said, over the past five years, the institution had a relatively higher share of tenure-line faculty compared with non-tenure-track instructors and clinical faculty, and colleges are working to rebalance those proportions.
