Oak Ridge Rowing Association reports busy spring regatta season and facility needs

Representatives of the Oak Ridge Rowing Association (AURA) updated City Council on a busy spring season of regattas, training and community programming and asked for continued municipal support for facility maintenance and upgrades.
Season summary and events: Melina Pahianas, speaking for AURA, said spring training began in January with about 40 visiting teams and as many as 550 athletes using the venue during peak weekends. Home events included a large Sierra regatta, Dogwood Juniors (42 teams, about 1,600 athletes over an expanded 2.5-day schedule) and an upcoming SCC championship in May and ACRA in late May/early June. The association hosts youth and adult Learn-to-Row sessions and has camps preparing athletes for college rowing.
Facility and equipment needs: The association asked the city to consider permanent signage, restroom improvements (frequent feedback from visiting teams), and clearing trees to maintain a minimum 14-foot vertical clearance along the embayment for boat trailers. AURA said it is transitioning to wakeless launch boats (to reduce wake disturbance behind racing shells); Explore Oak Ridge supported acquisition of a wakeless launch. The association also reported temporary website malware problems and is working with a vendor to restore online information.
Volunteer and staffing model: The organization said most work is volunteer-run; AURA maintains a small paid coaching and events staff and an active volunteer board that manages policies, scholarships and equipment-storage logistics. Council members and staff praised the association's volunteer base and regional draw; staff said public-works crews had assisted with regatta setup and site maintenance.
Next steps: AURA invited council and staff to Learn-to-Row events and asked staff to consider the facility requests as part of maintenance planning and future capital projects.
