Board discusses adding junior and senior student representatives; may draft policy

Board members on April 28 discussed a proposal, raised at a recent conference, to add student representatives to the local board. Miss Biggs said some districts allow a junior and senior representative to attend monthly board meetings to provide student perspective; the suggested model is a two-year cycle where the junior learns from the senior and continues as the senior the following year.
Board members said student representatives would not participate in closed sessions. The superintendent and several members suggested gathering sample policies and contacting districts that have implemented student reps to learn from their experience. Miss Biggs said nominations would come through teachers and administrators and the board would make the final selection from recommended candidates.
No formal policy was adopted; the board directed staff to collect more information, sample policies and local contacts, and to include the topic on the agenda for the board retreat.
