The Eau Claire City Council unanimously approved resolutions April 22 to accept two donated pedestrian- and traffic-safety devices.
Director of Public Works/Traffic (Director Nuss) described the first donation as an RRFB — a pedestrian-activated device that flashes in a wig-wag pattern and is solar-powered. Staff recommended siting the device at a higher-use crossing on Whipple Street. Council member Brewster asked whether the donor specified the location; Director Nuss confirmed the donation was specific to the Whipple Street location. Vice President Wortman noted the donation would allow a project the city lacked budget for to move forward.
The second donation provides two solar-powered flashing perimeter stop signs for the London Road/Damon Street intersection, which the city recently converted to an all-way stop. Director Nuss said the equipment will be installed by the city electrician and the city will maintain it going forward. The donation came from Property Mines and Rocket Construction.
Council members praised the private support and noted the benefits for pedestrian and motorist safety. Both items passed unanimous roll-call votes.
The council also discussed the city’s newly formalized process for safety-related donations and said residents who wish to propose installations should contact the city engineering department.
