Representatives of Madras Saddle and Game Club told commissioners the arena footing contains rocks that produce unsafe conditions for horses and riders, causing slips and career-ending injuries. The club offered to pay half the $3,500 contractor quote and to provide volunteer labor to help prepare the arena for Rock Dog's work; Rock Dog offered a $1,000 discount off the usual $4,500 price. Commissioners cited potential economic benefits to the community from improved facilities and agreed TRT funds are an appropriate one-time use to support an improvement that aids events drawing visitors.
The board asked the contractor to bill the county directly for the county share; Rock Dog will also send the Saddle & Game Club its half of the invoice. Commissioners emphasized that the club and fair board need to coordinate maintenance and consider future upkeep; they also encouraged exploring sponsorship and volunteer strategies for longer-term improvements.
The motion to allocate $1,750 from TRT to cover half of the rock removal and footing work passed by voice vote.
