Dallas commission highlights CDC Week events, Austin Street Center tour and May 17 community bus tour

The Community Development Commission on May 1 reviewed events held for Community Development Week and announced an upcoming community bus tour for May 17.
Chair Melanie Rubin and other commissioners described an open house at an elementary school, a proclamation read at City Hall recognizing Community Development Week on behalf of Mayor Eric Johnson, a staff recognition at the prior City Council meeting, and an in-kind donation drive and tour at the Austin Street Center. The proclamation text cited the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, funded by HUD, and said that over the past three years the community has received "almost $41,000,000 in formula funds" that supported housing rehabilitation, homebuyer assistance, infrastructure improvements and human services.
Chair Rubin and staff praised the Grants Administration team for public outreach work during the FY25-26 consolidated plan neighborhood meetings; City Council publicly recognized Shan Williams, Justice Bolo and the grants team earlier in the week. Vice Chair Barrientos described the commission’s May 17 community development bus tour as a "boots-on-the-ground" opportunity; staff said the bus will meet at City Hall at 8:00 a.m. and depart no later than 8:45 a.m., with the tour returning to City Hall at about 1 p.m. Planned stops include a neighborhood visit, a mixed-use housing site (referred to in the meeting as "Jaipur Lofts") and infrastructure improvements in Bachman Lake.
Commissioners also reported volunteering and donation activities at the Austin Street Center. Staff identified participants at the donation drive and tour, including Jennifer Atchison (chief advancement officer), David Stucker (director of government grants and administration) and Julian Mensa (senior director of development). Park and recreation staff who joined site visits were identified as Steven Baker (assistant director), Christine Reed (service area manager) and John Jenkins (director of park and recreation).
The commission encouraged members and the public to attend the May 17 tour and noted the commission will circulate an itinerary and a doodle poll for attendance.
