Road and Bridge reports culvert replacements, overlay prep and plans to expand in‑house roadwork

The county Road and Bridge superintendent told commissioners crews have been installing culverts, preparing roads for an upcoming overlay program and planning work that will widen some road sections by replacing box culverts with large‑diameter pipe.

Crews installed roughly 20 culverts in the prior week and have staged additional culverts for the overlay roads. The superintendent said some roads will need temporary closure while crews replace box culverts; he cited 42‑inch pipe for those jobs and said the county will use highway‑grade gray plastic pipe for improved fire resistance.

Weather has slowed finishing work in places where fresh dirt has not yet stabilized; the superintendent said heavy, closely spaced rains produced conditions that are difficult to address until the rain subsides. He cautioned that extraordinary rain events can overwhelm even large storm systems and reiterated that some project roads may be moved to next year’s program. The department is considering expanding in‑house paving capability to cover more smaller roads and subdivision streets in future seasons.
