Programs highlighted included a city volunteer portal that now handles signups, digital waivers and background checks; a "Keeping It Beautiful" litter‑cleanup program with two targeted cleanups each year; an adopt‑a‑spot program for quarterly maintenance; and a "Community Built Here" volunteer effort that pairs neighborhood needs with volunteers and partner groups.
She described partnerships with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to host classes on landscaping and yard maintenance and with local churches and the fire department to support home repair and cleanup projects for neighbors in need. The division also provides a block‑party trailer and movie‑night supplies for HOAs and community groups.
Demings said the city recently won a governor's achievement award in its category (which brought a grant for a landscaping project on Highway 75), achieved "silver star" status with Keep Texas Beautiful, obtained scenic city recognition and continues Tree City USA status.
Practical details and outreach: staff asked commissioners and volunteers to use the new volunteer website to view and sign up for opportunities; volunteers on the site can receive email notices when new shifts are added. Demings said the city has a trailer stocked with tools and can supply materials in limited cases for volunteer repair projects.
