Sunnyvale approves $766,025 design contract for Tripp and Rebecca road rehabilitation

The Sunnyvale Town Council voted 5-0 April 28 to award an engineering design contract to Schaumburg & Polk Inc. in the amount of $766,025 to complete design for the remaining portion of Tripp Road and Rebecca Road improvements.
Staff said the project will rehabilitate the roadway by milling and replacing asphalt, stabilizing subgrade, installing geotextile reinforcement, and replacing aging drainage culverts. The contract includes evaluation and potential replacement of a 6-inch cast-iron water main with a new 12-inch PVC main, inspection and potential replacement of sanitary sewer where needed, culvert work and other drainage improvements. Staff estimated the total design-plus-construction cost at about $9.2 million, which includes contingencies because design is not complete.
Council and staff addressed pedestrian access. The design will provide sidewalks from Collins Road to Robins Ridge but not the full length to East Fork because of large bar ditches, tree cover and steep embankments on portions of the corridor; staff said enclosing ditches to allow full-length sidewalks would require extensive tree removal and significantly higher cost. Staff also said the town is designing a trail connection and will provide striping, dynamic speed signs in some locations and selective guardrail where ditch depths create hazards.
Design is scheduled to begin immediately if awarded; staff said they anticipate design completed and construction bidding by mid-February 2026. Staff noted they are coordinating this work with the larger US 80 reconstruction project in the area.
Motion: authorize the town manager to execute the engineering design contract with Schaumburg & Polk Inc. for the Tripp Road/Rebecca Road improvement project in the amount of $766,025. Mover: Mr. Allen. Second: Mr. Clark. Vote: 5–0 (Mr. Finch and Mr. Eldridge absent).
