Students and staff showcase IB programs at four district schools

At the April 23 board meeting the district’s International Baccalaureate (IB) programs from four sites presented program updates and student work to trustees.
Monte Gardens Elementary, a candidate school, described a March verification visit that included classroom observations, recorded and live lessons, special classes and panels with parents, teachers and district staff. Student ambassadors summarized their preparation and interviews with the visiting IB team and said the team called their interview the ‘‘sealing the deal’’ round; staff said the district is awaiting formal authorization from the IB organization.
Sequoia Elementary promoted two upcoming events: a multicultural fair on April 25 and a Primary Years Programme (PYP) exhibition for fifth graders on May 16. Fifth‑grade students described community projects tied to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including a beach cleanup and a clothing swap, and invited the board and public to attend.
Oak Grove Middle School staff and students described work building IB‑aligned instruction, professional development that integrates AVID and ELD frameworks, and eighth‑grade community projects. Students described personal learning gains and projects to promote belonging and cultural understanding.
Ignacio Valley High School presented program growth and student leadership in IB, including expanded course offerings, co‑teaching and cross‑disciplinary instruction. Students highlighted smaller class sizes, teacher access, internal assessments (IAs), co‑curricular field days and pathways that prepare students for postsecondary options. Presenters noted Ignacio Valley is the only IB school in the county.
Trustees thanked students and staff and noted the value of expanding IB access across the district.
