The Octorara Area School District board agreed to appoint Mike Hoffman to the vacant Region 1 board seat and scheduled a public interview with him at the next work session.
Board members debated whether to follow the district’s prior multi‑step appointment process or to make a quick appointment because the vacancy will last only until the November general election. Supporters of a swift appointment cited the need for a full board during near‑term budget work and an expected short tenure that would be unlikely to continue past the general election; others urged keeping the open application process to ensure community members had an opportunity to apply.
“I make the suggestion that we appoint mister Hoffman to fill that seat, until the general election,” one board member said during the discussion, arguing the board had the authority to appoint and that Hoffman had completed paperwork to appear on the ballot. Opponents said they were not opposed to Hoffman but wanted at least a brief interview so the board and community could hear from him.
A motion to appoint Hoffman with a public interview at the next work session carried. The board placed the interview on the agenda for the following month and will vote again to finalize the appointment at that meeting if the board chooses to do so.
Why it matters: The appointed member will take part in immediate district decisions on budgeting and a superintendent search and will serve until the November election or until the board follows whatever process it sets for finalizing the appointment.
