The appointment was made by motion and second; President Edward Finley called for a voice vote and announced the motion passed 7-0. The board had entered closed session under Texas Government Code sections 551.074 and 551.071 earlier in the meeting to discuss personnel and attorney consultation matters.
James Butler addressed the meeting after the vote, thanking supporters and saying he was "honored to be selected for this position as principal at Slaughter Intermediate School." Butler said he looked forward to "leading with integrity and compassion and purpose" and to working with the campus team.
The action follows the board's standard closed-session process for personnel matters. No salary, contract length, or other employment terms were specified in the public motion or the accompanying discussion at the meeting.
