Darien School District highlights quiz-bowl wins, SBAC testing schedule, HHR building tour and committee cancellations

A district staff member told the Darien School District meeting that two middle school quiz-bowl teams placed first in Boston and will advance to nationals in Chicago.
The staff member also announced several school events and operational items, including the start of kindergarten meet-and-greets for the Class of 2038, Earth Day activities at the elementary school, the district’s SBAC testing schedule, interviews for two vacant system principal positions, an invitation to a public tour of HHR building projects at Henley and the cancellation of this month’s Facilities and Policy committee meetings.
"Being recognized. And of course we have our middle school quiz bowl who competed in Boston and 2 teams took first place and we look forward to them moving forward to their nationals in Chicago," the staff member said. The same speaker noted that the sixth grade donated the largest number of cans in the March food drive and won the "pie" competition; as a result, that grade got to put "a pie in the face of the assistant principal, Mister Ted Manahood," the staff member said.
The staff member described elementary Earth Day activities that included energy-conservation efforts, a walk-and-bike-to-school event, a "tries to treasure" challenge and a portable inflatable planetarium provided by parent-teacher organizations. The district's art show is on display at the Library and Town Hall and will come down April 30, the staff member said.
On assessments, the staff member said SBAC testing begins next week with the middle school mathematics portion; "throughout the week of May all of our elementary students and middle school students will be partaking of the SBAC," the staff member said. The district is conducting interviews for two vacant system principal positions and said those hires "will become the closure pretty quickly," according to the transcript.
The staff member invited board members and the public to a viewing of ongoing HHR building projects, starting at Henley at 9:00 a.m.; a public notice was said to be scheduled for release the next day. The staff member also said the Facilities Committee and the Policy Committee meetings scheduled for this month were canceled and will appear on May agendas.
At the end of the announcements the meeting experienced a technical issue as the proceedings moved toward public comment; staff paused to restart the system, and the transcript records brief audio troubleshooting.
