Washoe County School District proclaims Educator Appreciation Week and recognizes 13 staff across district

The Washoe County School District board formally proclaimed May as Educator Appreciation Month and honored 13 staff members across classroom, support and operations roles during its April 22 board meeting.
Dr. Katie Louise Weir, director of professional growth systems, introduced the proclamation and the honorees, which included teachers, kitchen managers, a school nurse, a fleet maintenance supervisor and instructional assistants. “This proclamation celebrates the heart of our school district, our educators,” Dr. Weir said.
Superintendent Joe Ernst read the proclamation, which acknowledged the contributions of bus drivers, nutrition staff, custodians, office personnel and other employees to a safe and supportive learning environment and called on the community to express gratitude for educators’ work. Ernst said the district and municipal partners had coordinated additional proclamations across Washoe County, including earlier recognition by the Board of County Commissioners.
Community partners were present in the boardroom. Anne Silver, chief executive officer of the Reno–Sparks Chamber of Commerce, and Sarah Hobbs Gill, executive director of Education Alliance, were among those thanked for helping to lead a teacher-appreciation fundraising campaign that funnels 100% of proceeds directly to teachers for classroom supplies and events.
The board recessed after the proclamation and photo with honorees. Trustees praised the district’s broad definition of educators to include nonclassroom staff who support student learning.
