Hermiston city councilor raises concerns about school's response to alleged student assault

Jackie Linton, a Hermiston resident and member of the Hermiston City Council, used the public comment period April 28 to ask the school board to pursue an investigation into an incident she said involved her grandson.
"I talked to the vice principal and wanted to find out what was going on with his investigation...nobody's returning my calls," Linton said. She described an incident in which students were "horsing around," then began punching her grandson. She said she had asked the school to investigate and to follow established disciplinary practices, and that she feared the child who had been targeted could be disciplined unfairly if he defended himself.
Linton said she had also spoken with Officer Nava and recounted past patterns she has observed, urging that the district handle the matter formally. "So I'm trying to avoid that. And so that's why I'm here tonight...something needs to be done," she said.
Board President and Superintendent Dr. Mooney acknowledged the comment and said Mooney would follow up with Linton after the meeting.
