Council approves one-year law enforcement contract addendum at $132,720

Providence City Council voted to approve a one-year addendum to the city's law enforcement services contract with Cache County, keeping the city's 2024 payment level and modifying hours for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

City Manager Ryan presented the proposed addendum, saying the city asked to "match the same budget number as last year" and that staff recommended approval of a one-year extension at the 2024 rate for 2025-26. Councilmembers then moved to approve the addendum for $132,720.

The measure was presented as a one-year adjustment while the county and cities work through a longer contract cycle. Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen told the council the county was proposing a temporary hourly increase at the county level next year and recommended revisiting a three-year contract in the next cycle.

Sheriff Jensen also reviewed service statistics in his report to the council: he said Providence had about 1,454 calls for service in the first nine months of the contract year (projecting roughly 1,940 for the full year) and that patrol hours and specific call types were variable. He told the council that traffic enforcement and proactive patrols had increased, noting local speeding citations rose from 239 last year to a projected roughly 400 for the current year.

The council adopted the addendum by voice vote. The motion carried; the transcript records the outcome as "Motion carries" but does not list a roll-call tally.

The one-year addendum keeps the city's payment at $132,720 for the 2025-26 year and moves discussions about a longer-term hourly rate and contract term to the next contract cycle.
