Tyrone Alexander, director of the Department of Human Resources, presented a brief audit status update to the committee. He said that when he was hired in February 2023 HR had 35 open audit items; as of the committee meeting HR had six open items remaining (four medium priority and two low priority).
Alexander said HR has been working closely with the Office of Internal Audit to provide documentation and process clarifications. Two low‑priority items relate to records retention and to ensuring consistent background‑check procedures for temporary/contract workers. Alexander said one medium‑priority item concerns vehicle utilization and that staff are conducting focus groups to collect data; he expected to submit materials to auditors within a week or two and hoped to secure closures on several items in the near term.
Why it matters
The audit backlog metric indicates progress on HR process improvements and oversight. Committee members asked for additional detail on collection amounts for a separate collections/audit item; Alexander said staff would follow up with the Office of Internal Audit to provide the requested documentation and hoped to close remaining items quickly.
Next steps
HR will continue to work with Internal Audit and provide the requested documentation, with the goal of clearing the remaining open items in coming weeks.
