The San Clemente Public Safety Committee heard April 22 that the fire department’s call processing remains fast but that road geometry and hills make overall response times slower than other parts of the county.
Chief Malott told the committee that call processing time — the interval from 911 call to unit dispatch — is about 55 seconds, and the department meets its 8 to 8.5 minute response goal about 80 percent of the time. “Eighty percent of the time we’re getting there in that 8 8 and a half minutes,” Chief Malott said.
Committee members were told that slower drive times reflect narrow streets, winding roads and steep hills in San Clemente, which lengthen travel even when dispatch and turnout are quick. The department said crews are working to…
