The Fremont County Board of County Commissioners announced the selection of Tanya Sutton as the county’s new executive director for the Department of Human Services (DHS). County administrators said Sutton was chosen after a brief search that produced eight applicants and four interviews; she has worked in the DHS for more than 18 years and most recently served as family services program administrator. The announcement said she will assume her new duties next Monday.
During the meeting county leaders presented a proclamation declaring May 2025 Foster Care Awareness Month in Fremont County, recognizing foster parents and noting a statewide shortage of foster families available to care for teens, sibling groups and children with complex behavioral or mental-health needs.
Molly Willard, supervisor for kinship and foster programs at DHS, read the proclamation and asked the public to consider becoming foster parents or helping kinship caregivers. Willard said the DHS front desk will route inquiries to staff for conversation and that the department can be reached through the county website or by phone at (719) 276-2318.
Commissioners praised the selection and the foster-care workforce. "She's going to be a breath of fresh air, I believe, and, yeah. We like when we are able to promote from within," one commissioner said.
The board voted to adopt the Foster Care Awareness Month proclamation. The roll call on the proclamation showed Commissioner Bell "Aye" and Commissioner Grantham "Aye;" the board noted a third commissioner was absent and the motion passed.
DHS also announced a departmental professional-development closure later in the week and staff described efforts to increase recruitment of foster families and kinship placements so children can remain in the local community when possible.
