District administrators updated the Timberlane Regional School District School Board on elementary enrollment and early-childhood registration, reporting that several grade levels are at or near capacity and that Atkinsons new preschool and full-day kindergarten currently have wait lists.
Atkinsons new preschool program has a wait list and full-day kindergarten currently shows two sections (20 and 20) with additional registrations pending, administrators said. "We are watching two grade levels. Those are darker shaded. Those grade levels are both at capacity at those schools," the enrollment presenter said, noting Atkinson kindergarten and the new preschool as points of concern. The presenter explained April 30 is the district's deadline for finalized placements and tuition payments for full-day kindergarten, and the district will decide whether to staff a third section or direct students to alternate programs based on final registrations.
Administrators identified two pressure points: Danville third grade (reported as 44 students, with policy max class size of 22) and Pollard Grade 2 (reported as 66 students across three classrooms of 22). The district said one flexible position may be available for reassignment if additional staffing is required, but that any recommendation to add staff would be brought to the board for a decision. "We would bring that kind of concern back to the board and then make some recommendations to you for some decisions," Mr. Krieger said.
Why it matters: class-size policy and staffing decisions affect classroom learning conditions and budget planning. Administrators urged the board that numbers will continue to fluctuate through the April 30 registration date, and they will present finalized placement and staffing recommendations after registration closes.
Clarifying details: preschool class size was stated as 12; Atkinson preschool is the first year offered outside of TLC and TLC remains an alternate program for 3-year-old placements. Administrators said there is physical classroom space available if a third Atkinson kindergarten section is required and that district planning will continue through end-of-April registration closes.
Next steps: administrators will return after the April 30 registration deadline with finalized class sizes, placement details and any staffing recommendations for board consideration.
