Superintendent highlights student ex officio appointments, board goals, river study and AI work

The superintendent said the district received 16 applications for the state-required ex officio student-member positions and selected Tatum Brennan and James Benjamin to serve. "We have two students that have been selected to serve, Tatum Brennan and James Benjamin," the superintendent said during the presentation; the board later approved their appointment.
The superintendent reviewed the Board of Education—s vision and mission and outlined the 2025-26 board goals, which the superintendent grouped into two categories: excellence in teaching and learning, and conditions for success. The first includes goals to strengthen academic excellence and promote student success through broad curricular access; the second focuses on fiscal responsibility, operational excellence and strengthening governance and community partnerships.
The superintendent highlighted a recent "day in the life" field experience at a district preserve where nearly 50 AP environmental-science students conducted river-study work. He credited partnerships with Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation that provided mentoring and scientific support.
He also noted classroom work exploring artificial intelligence, citing Mr. Piotrowski—s efforts to use AI as a learning tool. The district plans a short segment on that work for public release.
The superintendent described the Challenger Athletics program—s recent events and said the district will present "Igniting Inclusion: Our Challenger Athletics Journey" at the upcoming New York State School Boards Association conference in Manhattan.
Ending: The superintendent said the district would unveil examples showing how the board—s five learner competencies appear across all nine schools in the coming months.
