Charlotte County to pilot school-zone speed cameras; board sets phased Jan. 5 launch and asks legal and logistics follow-ups

Charlotte County public works and administration on Oct. 21 outlined a phased program to place automated speed-detection cameras and associated signage in school zones, with a planned group “go-live” and warning period after winter break and an anticipated citation start date following the warning window.

Public Works Director John Elias told commissioners the system is intended to operate only during posted school-zone times (including a 30-minute pre- and post-school window for breakfast and dismissal) and that each detected violation will be reviewed through a multistage verification process before the sheriff’s traffic enforcement officer issues a citation.

Why it matters: Commissioners said school-zone stacking and unsafe pickup/dropoff patterns create immediate hazards in some neighborhoods. The cameras are meant to reinforce compliance where children are most at risk; staff emphasized the program’s safety intent and said revenue is only a secondary consequence if violations occur.
