Trustees approve sheriff-led SRO program, move Yerington PD coverage to Lyon County Sheriff (6-1)

The Lyon County School District Board of Trustees voted 6–1 on March 2025 to approve a two-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) under which the Lyon County Sheriff's Office would provide five school resource officers to cover district attendance areas, replacing the current split arrangement that included the Yerington Police Department.
The decision came after a multi-hour public comment period and board discussion in which district staff presented three options. Executive Director of Operations Harmon Banks told the board the district had negotiated three alternatives: a one-year MOU keeping both agencies; a two-year MOU keeping both agencies; and Option 3, a two-year MOU with only the Lyon County Sheriff's Office providing five SROs. "We are bringing forward several options for SRO services for the upcoming school year or two," Banks said during the presentation.
