Board told Nebraska adopted 2024 K–12 science standards; district will phase materials and curriculum work

District staff briefed the board on Nebraska’s 2024 college- and career-ready science standards and a phased plan to align curriculum, pilot materials and adopt resources across K–12.
District curriculum staff told the board the Nebraska State Board of Education adopted the 2024 College and Career Ready Science Standards on Sept. 6, 2024, and outlined the district’s timeline to align local curriculum and instructional materials.
Staff said the revised standards are organized by grade-level K–8 and by science content area in high school (physical science, life science, earth and space science). Changes from the 2017 standards are largely wording and clarity edits intended to emphasize higher-level thinking skills and application. The district plans summer curriculum work to align unit guides to the new standards, pilot instructional materials during 2025–26, and implement selected materials in 2026–27. The curriculum team indicated it will bring a formal recommendation to adopt the Nebraska 2024 science standards to the board the following month.
Board members were provided links to department resources and told training and phased material adoption will be scheduled for teachers over the next two school years.
