Public urges humane bee relocation; board clarifies vendor options after colony at Carl Hayden

A community representative and a Carl Hayden parent group asked the Phoenix Union Governing Board to prefer humane removal and relocation of bee colonies after a recent extermination under a Carl Hayden auditorium.
Joseph Mendoza, representing the Carl Hayden Bridal Welfare Club, told the board a bee colony found under the school auditorium was later exterminated and urged a district resolution favoring relocation, arguing that bees are vital pollinators and that relocation would be more consistent with the district’s stated values.
When the board later discussed consent-item 10P (vendor renewals), members asked whether a listed pest-control vendor performs relocations or exterminations. District staff said the listed company handles general pest control and that the district is not required to use that vendor exclusively. Staff added that separate vendors able to perform safe relocation are being brought into the vendor list and that formal procurement steps will be followed if usage exceeds thresholds.
Board member comments thanked staff for quickly addressing concerns and the board approved the consent agenda item. The board also asked staff to continue seeking humane relocation vendors and to consider a resolution or vendor preference in follow-up communications.
