Bill would require county elected officials to be registered voters in Nevada
Summary
AB 14, presented by the Nevada Association of Counties, would require county elected officials (commissioners, clerks, recorders, sheriffs, treasurers, assessors, constables, public administrators and district attorneys) to be registered voters in the state; the committee heard the bill and asked technical questions about scope.
Jennifer Berthiaume, government affairs manager for the Nevada Association of Counties, presented Assembly Bill 14 to the Senate Committee on Government Affairs. “AB 14 would require county elected officials to be registered to vote in the state of Nevada,” she said.
Current law requires most county officers to be qualified electors in their respective counties, and district attorneys must be state residents and licensed to practice law. Berthiaume said members asked for consistency and noted that more than 30 states already require county elected officials to be registered voters.
Why it matters: Supporters said registering to vote is a fundamental civic right and a basic qualification for serving in elected county office. Berthiaume gave examples of local requirements — in Carson City, many boards and commissions require appointees to be registered voters; Douglas County requires registered voter status for trustees of general improvement districts.
Committee questions and scope: Senators asked whether the bill would cover elected school board trustees; Berthiaume said it does not cover school district trustees as drafted but said she would discuss that with members. No public opposition was recorded during the hearing.
