Board discusses state-required teacher-alert devices and wide guardian program

During the April 28 working session the Washington County School District board discussed teacher alert devices and other safety measures that align with state requirements.
Staff described devices that operate like a teacher-worn alert (lanyard/credit-card style) that can push a button to notify offices and law enforcement. The presenters said the state is preparing an RFP for a statewide system; staff are awaiting vendor contact and noted the RFP may include funding. One staff member said some required components must be in place within five years and that other elements have a 10-year window.
The staff presentation addressed how the devices integrate with phone systems, can send automatic police alerts, and the range of optional ‘‘buy-the-box’’ add-ons that vendors market for more expensive classroom surveillance or analytics. Board members cautioned against vendor upsells and noted the district has been evaluating options to avoid prohibitive recurring costs.
Separately, the board highlighted the district’s guardian program: staff reported that all guardians have been trained and placed across the district, and that the district’s relationships with local law-enforcement agencies — city police, county sheriff and municipal partners — support school safety operations. Board members said the district is “ahead” of many other districts because guardians are in place and trained.
No procurement or contract award occurred at the working session; staff said they will track the state RFP and return recommendations when vendor information and potential funding are available.
