Bill to designate Larry Itliong Day draws broad support from Filipino community groups

Assemblymember Erica Mosca (Assembly District 14) told the Senate Committee on Government Affairs that Assembly Bill 83 would establish Larry Itliong Day as an official day of observance in Nevada to recognize the Filipino labor leader’s role in organizing farmworkers.
"This is a bill that ensures our most famous Filipino is celebrated in our state...Larry Itliong organized the Delano grape strike," Mosca said, explaining the measure’s intent to give Nevada’s Filipino community a formal observance.
Representatives from multiple Filipino and labor organizations testified in strong support. Cherine Lumibao of oneAPIA Nevada told the committee that Nevada is home to a large Filipino population and that establishing the observance would "honor not just one man's legacy but the enduring impact of an entire community." No witnesses opposed the bill during the hearing.
Other supporters included Make the Road Nevada, Native Voters Alliance Nevada, SEIU local representatives and chapters of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations. Telephone callers and in-person witnesses cited community recognition, cultural visibility and educational value as reasons to support the measure.
The committee invited public comment by phone and in person; the hearing record shows multiple callers and organizational representatives in support and no recorded callers in opposition or neutral positions. The committee did not record a committee vote during the session.
Assembly Bill 83 advances as a sponsored bill following the hearing; further committee action will determine whether the measure proceeds to the next legislative stage.
