Valley County IT staff updated the commissioners April 28 on two technology items: transitioning county email to an official valleycountyid.gov domain, and drafting policy around employee use of artificial-intelligence tools.
IT reported testing is underway and that the county will move to the valleycountyid.gov domain; staff has notified employees and will coordinate public outreach so external partners and residents understand the change. IT said the old email addresses will continue to work for a transition period to allow employees to update business cards and communications.
On AI, IT said employees have requested use of language models for drafting and routine tasks but the county does not yet have an official policy. IT recommended developing a policy with the county’s legal team before broad deployment of AI tools, and highlighted cybersecurity and accuracy concerns. Commissioners and department directors agreed the county should implement a clear policy and include cybersecurity safeguards.
Next steps: IT will continue domain rollout testing, coordinate with communications staff for external notice, and work with legal to draft an AI usage policy for staff review.
