McKinney opens 2025 boards and commissions appointment cycle; applications due June 20

A City Secretary’s Office staff member briefed the City Council on April 22 about the 2025 boards and commissions appointment process, timelines and application guidance for service periods running Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2027 (except partial terms).

The presenter said there are approximately 21 city boards and commissions for which council makes appointments. Key dates and steps outlined were: application deadline June 20; the city secretary’s office will provide a candidate application packet to council on July 7; interviews will be conducted during multiple sessions in July and August; preferencing submittals from council are due Aug. 17; and the council appointment meeting is scheduled for Aug. 26. Onboarding and Open Government training for appointed members must be completed by Oct. 1, when the new terms begin.

The staff member described regular members as active participants expected to engage with staff and make recommendations, and alternate members as reserve participants who serve when regular members are absent and may be promoted if vacancies occur. The office emphasized that council retains authority to make appointments and removals at any time and encouraged prospective applicants to attend board meetings and review bylaws and member policies before applying.

The City Secretary’s Office said it will have a presence at the Serve McKinney event next Tuesday to provide information and application assistance. The presenter stood for questions at the conclusion of the update; no formal council action on appointments occurred during the meeting.
