Huber Heights Military and Veterans Commission previews Memorial Day plans, honor wall and community programs

Anthony Windsor, chair of the Huber Heights Military and Veterans Commission, told the council the commission is expanding community outreach tied to Memorial Day and other veteran‑focused events.
Windsor said the commission’s 2024 Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies drew broad participation from Gold Star families, the local ROTC and military leadership. For Memorial Day 2025, he said Colonel Travis Pond (deputy commander of the 80th Air Base wing, as given by the commission) is confirmed to attend and the commission is attempting to secure AJ Wildly (regional American Legion commander) as a speaker.
Kevin McDonald, a commission member, said the commission will present a revised design for its paver program at the commission’s next meeting. McDonald also described plans for an annual military appreciation game trophy incorporating a bronzeed boot and an essay contest for Huber Heights juniors and seniors on “what it means to be an American citizen.” McDonald said the essay contest would include a $500 Sinclair scholarship for the winning senior or junior subject to program details and approvals.
Windsor reported progress on a Wayne High School service wall of honor: names were collected from Sept. 12, 2024, through March 1, 2025; a mock‑up received final approval on April 8, 2025; an installation date is expected in about four to six weeks and a community ceremony will be planned then. Windsor said the first installation phase will honor 89 graduates and that names will be added twice each year.
Windsor and McDonald thanked city staff and volunteers for recent events and requested that council members continue to support public ceremonies and outreach.
