Millbrae public works director Sam Bautista honored at council meeting; department recognized for storm response and capital work

Millbrae Public Works Director Sam Bautista was honored during the April 22 City Council meeting as he prepares to retire and relocate out of state.
Bautista recounted that he began his public‑works career in Millbrae in February 2001, worked elsewhere for several years and returned to Millbrae in 2022 to lead the department. In remarks to the council he thanked city staff, management and public‑works employees and highlighted work completed or under way, including the Marina Vista Park redesign and grant activity supporting capital improvements.
Mayor Fung, Council members and City Manager Tom Williams praised Bautista’s leadership, noting his role in organizing capital improvement programming, securing grants, and directing storm and emergency responses. Williams said Bautista helped the city win grants and oversaw work on parking, traffic calming, parks renovation and other infrastructure priorities; council members thanked him for his service and wished him well.
Public Works staff and supervisors were introduced during the meeting; Bautista invited his division leads to stand for recognition. Several council members and residents publicly thanked the department for routine but essential services such as storm‑response, water main repairs and street maintenance.
Resident Mary Ann Kong and others praised the department’s responsiveness during storms and city events. The council declared a short celebration and recognized Public Works during National Public Works Week, which the council had earlier proclaimed.
Bautista’s remarks stressed service, public safety and teamwork; he said the department’s projects and ongoing operations reflect work that will continue after his departure. The meeting included a brief reception and a planned 10‑minute break for staff, council and the public to visit and take photographs.
