Fairport board recognizes PTA, scholar‑athletes and awards Dollars for Scholars' Donna Yaman honor to counseling department

The Fairport Central School District Board of Education opened its April 22 meeting by recognizing the work of parent‑teacher organizations, honoring winter scholar‑athletes and receiving an update from the Fairport chapter of Dollars for Scholars.
Superintendent Brett Provenzano told the board the district wanted to “appreciate and recognize all the different parts that make us an incredible school district,” and invited representatives from local PTSAs to receive certificates that the district will distribute through school principals.
Following the PTA recognition, Athletic Director (on record as Mr. Killian) presented winter scholar‑athlete awards. The district noted team and individual postseason honors across winter sports, including: - Boys alpine skiing (Coach Chris Barker): Section V Class A champions and an individual state champion (giant slalom). - Boys and girls basketball: Section V postseason honors and advancement to final rounds; coaches named in the presentation included Scott Fitch and Tom Veil. - Boys and girls bowling (coaches Ginny/ Jamie Maskely and Angela Hyman): postseason recognition and an individual Class A championship for Mackenzie Smolnick. - Winter competitive cheer, ice hockey, indoor/outdoor track, Nordic skiing, swimming and diving and wrestling: multiple all‑county honorees and state qualifiers; the wrestling program sent a record five athletes to the state tournament and Fairport also fielded its first girls wrestling program with a section champion.
The board then heard from the Fairport Parenting chapter of Dollars for Scholars. Eileen Hartman introduced the chapter and said the group will award a record amount of scholarship funds at its June 5 ceremony. “At the annual award ceremony on June 5 this year, we will be providing a record amount of funds to students for the first time, awarding an amount exceeding a hundred thousand dollars,” Hartman said.
The Dollars for Scholars chapter presented the Donna Yaman honor award to the Fairport High School counseling department — Francine Bouton accepted the framed certificate with other members of the counseling staff present. Hartman described Donna Yaman as a longtime Dollars for Scholars volunteer and noted Yaman’s ties to the counseling office and the district.
Administrators said the Dollars for Scholars chapter works closely with the school counseling staff to identify candidates, provide recommendation support and manage logistics for scholarship applications and the annual award ceremony. Board and Dollars for Scholars representatives also thanked counseling staff and volunteers for their continued partnership and said parents and students are invited to the June awards event.

The scholar‑athlete recognitions showcased student academic performance tied to athletics, an area the district emphasized in its presentation.
