Sycamore band directors thank county commissioners for allocations, request $11,000 for drumline equipment

Band directors from Sycamore schools addressed the Cheatham County Commission on April 21 to thank the commission for recent funding and to outline instrument needs for next year.
Malik Sylvester introduced the presentation. Penelope Pitts, identified as a Sycamore band director, said the middle school received $3,000 this year and the high school received $5,000, funded via allocations that flowed through the school board and county support. The funds were used to purchase and repair instruments; Pitts said some repairs that would have taken three to four years were completed this year because of the allocations.
The directors said their program functions as a single, cohesive program across middle and high school, and they described plans for next year: purchase of a concert snare drum, a bass clarinet and, most urgently, replacement of high school drumline equipment. Pitts said the drumline equipment they currently use is more than 15 years old, replacement parts are unavailable, and temporary repairs have been completed by parents and community volunteers. The band directors estimated replacement drumline equipment would cost about $11,000.
The directors thanked the commission for support and said they hoped the allocations would continue in future years to maintain and improve the program's instruments and student opportunities. There was no commission vote associated with the public comment.
