District to pursue Daktronics video display for stadium; installation and electrical costs are additional

Hudsonville Public School District staff proposed installing a Daktronics video display at the high-school stadium and asked the board to consider the project in the coming month. The recommended package in the board packet covers the display, speakers and warranty; electrical work and site installation are additional and are estimated by staff at roughly $75,000 to $125,000 depending on site conditions.
Staff noted the district already uses Daktronics at its field-house facility; electing Daktronics would preserve software and operational compatibility with existing equipment. The proposed location is on the north side of the stadium; if the larger video display is installed staff proposed removing a smaller existing scoreboard. The presenter said the turnaround for design and build is about three months and projected an installation target of July if the board approves the plan. The bid price presented to the board did not include site electrical work, soil borings or other civil work, and staff said they were awaiting final electrical estimates and bore results before returning with a final contract recommendation.
Staff described benefits beyond athletics: the display could be used for track meets, band competitions and facility rentals, and sponsorship revenues could support athletic operations. The vendor scope includes a speaker system to project audio from the board and a multi-year warranty; staff said local vendor support and regional adoption of similar systems made maintenance and parts support more available than in earlier years.
No final award was made at the meeting; staff said they will return with a sole-source letter and final cost estimates for installation and electrical work at an upcoming meeting.
