Hudsonville administrators recommend new marching-band uniforms; purchase to be presented at next meeting

Hudsonville Public School District administrators told the school board they intend to request approval next month to buy new marching-band uniforms for the high school, saying the current uniforms are about 13 years old and in poor condition.

The presenter said roughly 30 incoming freshmen have signed up for marching band next fall and that, because a large senior class is graduating, overall band size this year should stay similar but is expected to grow substantially in subsequent years as current sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders advance. The district reported that 70 to 75 percent of that grade cohort continue in fine arts (band, orchestra or choir), a trend administrators said will increase marching-band participation.

District staff said they solicited bids and have met the threshold requiring a formal procurement process. The administration showed a sample uniform and described components that can be changed from year to year (for example, a removable performance top and interchangeable accents) to align with annual show themes. Staff recommended presenting a purchase request at the board’s April meeting and said they will size students soon; they recommended ordering roughly 20 percent more uniforms than the immediate need to allow for sizing and growth. Officials described a vendor guarantee allowing replication of the uniform for about five years; beyond that, materials can change and reproduction is less certain.

No formal board action was taken at this meeting. Staff emphasized timing concerns: producing and sizing uniforms may be tight to have full uniforms by the first week of the season, but staff expect students will at least have performance shirts early in the season and full uniforms for later events such as the Christmas parade. The board packet includes a recommended quantity and estimated cost, the presenter said, but the transcript does not record a specific dollar figure for the uniform purchase.

"They are falling apart," the presenter said of the existing uniforms, adding the new design is "modern" and aligns with school colors. The sample was shown to board members and to a student who tried it on during the meeting.

The administration said additional instrument purchases and other marching-band expenditures may be needed if student numbers rise; those items will be presented for approval through the district’s normal budget and procurement process.
