Santa Rosa board honors students: grandparent essay winners, NJROTC national champions and speech & debate medalists

The Santa Rosa County School Board opened its May 1 meeting with recognition of student achievements across the district.
The board presented certificates to winners of the Santa Rosa Retired Educators grandparent essay contest. Melanie White of the Santa Rosa Retired Educators told the board that first-place district-level winner Brooklyn Barnhart advanced to and won the next-level district competition and will compete at the Florida state convention in St. Augustine, where she will read her essay and receive a state cash award.
The board also recognized Pace High School's NJROTC unit for winning the Navy National Drill, Academic and Athletic Championship. The coach told the board the unit's overall championship was the program's fourth national title in five years; multiple cadets described their roles on drill, color guard, exhibition and sprint teams.
School district staff and a coach also recognized students who placed at the Florida Forensic League and other state tournaments in speech and debate. Northwest Florida coach of the year Ashley Carter noted that middle and high school competitors earned dozens of top finishes at state meets and several students qualified for national tournaments in Chicago and Des Moines.
Board members praised the students and staff for their accomplishments; the recognitions were presented without formal action.
