City reports projected payments from PFAS settlements; funds expected later this year

City staff reported to the commission that Sanford expects to receive settlement proceeds tied to PFAS litigation. The presentation said projected receipts include roughly $3.2 million from a 3M settlement (expected in the second or third quarter of the calendar year) and about $482,000 as a one-time lump-sum payment from a DuPont settlement, plus additional scheduled incremental payments totaling roughly $1.7 million.
Staff said the airport authority had enabled the city to use an attorney familiar with the claims and that the combined settlements are projected to arrive in due course. City staff stated these funds are unrestricted and will be deposited and reported to the commission when received.
No appropriation decisions were made at the work session. Commissioners asked whether funds would initially go to the general fund; staff indicated that final allocation and usage will be determined as receipts arrive, and that the commission and staff would be informed as funds are received.
